20th December 2020 is an important date in the world of power supplies, as this is the date when one of the most common safety standards, IEC 60950-1, is replaced by a new standard. IEC 62368-1.
IEC 62368-1 is also referred to as either EN62368-1 for UK and Europe, or UL 62368-1 for the USA. The change is not simply just an up-issue or name change against the traditional 60950 standard. It represents completely different engineering principles. Importantly, this means that even if your existing power supply carries 60950-1 approval, there is a very strong chance it will need to be re-approved to the new 62368-1 standard on or before 20th December 2020. If your existing power supply does not carry 62368-1 approval then you will need to make plans to switch to a unit that does have this new power supply safety approval. We say ‘power supply safety approval’, although the scope of this standard is much broader, covering a whole range of IT and AV equipment.
62368-1 applies to all aspects of a system. Not only the final product, but also components such as power supplies. For more infomation on the standard, as well as a whole range of products that are approved to 62368-1 please contact Tiger Power Supplies.
